The Senate Banking Committee rejected President Donald Trump's pick to head the Export-Import Bank after an intense advocacy effort led by business groups opposed to the nomination.
Committee members voted 13-10 on Tuesday against the nomination of former Rep. Scott Garrett (R-N.J.) to lead the agency, Politico reported. Two Republicans joined the committee's Democrats in voting against Garrett.
Garrett is a Tea Party Republican and long-time critic of the Ex-Im Bank, which he views as a form of corporate welfare. Trump's decision to nominate Garrett as head of the agency he publicly despised baffled business groups that valued the institution.
The National Association of Manufacturers was among Garrett's loudest critics and launched a campaign to block his nomination. In a statement, NAM CEO Jay Timmons said Senate committee members "did right by America's manufacturing workers."
"This agency, which has supported 1.4 million jobs over the past several years, is too important for manufacturers and our economy to be led by someone who has consistently tried to destroy it," Timmons said. http://bit.ly/2klm8pr
The committee approved four other, less-controversial nominees to the Ex-Im Bank's board the same day, Politico reported. http://politi.co/2BxE0oH
